Bonjour,
Selon mon humble analyse...
ASDF may be sent to Iraq ahead of ground troops: official
TOKYO, Nov. 23, Kyodo - A senior official of the Defense Agency said Sunday it is ''one option'' to send Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) personnel to the Middle East to support Iraq's rehabilitation ahead of a planned dispatch of ground troops, paving the way for a deployment of Japanese troops to the region within this year.
Deteriorating security in Iraq has led the government to give up sending the first Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) troops there by the end of the year. However, the government is reportedly concerned that international society may think Tokyo is backing away from efforts to fight terrorism.
Demand for air transportation services remains high in Iraq, prompting the government to consider sending the ASDF ahead of the GSDF, government sources said.
The government now envisions sending C130 transport planes from the ASDF's Komaki base in Aichi Prefecture to transfer aid materials for U.S. troops from Kuwait to several airports in Iraq, including the national airport in Baghdad.
The planes will also be involved in transportation of medical supplies and food, the sources said.
