Vending machine alarms programmed to call police
The Saitama prefectural police, in cooperation with a major home electronics manufacturer, have developed a new alarm system for automatic vending machines that will alert police when the machines are being vandalized or robbed.
Kazo Police Station in Kazo, Saitama Prefecture, has ushered in an innovation that it claims is the first of its kind--a system that automatically notifies the closest police station if it senses vibrations caused by the vending machine being damaged.
The prefectural police are conducting further tests of the practical effectiveness of the system, which they hope will be widely adopted and will result in more arrests.
In the early hours of Sept. 21, Kazo Police Station received an alarm from a vending machine in Otonemachi, Saitama Prefecture.
Officers arrived at the scene in less than 10 minutes to find two masked men using a bar to break open a soft drink machine.
The officers arrested one of the men on suspicion of attempted robbery. The other man was arrested one week later on the same suspicion.
The police said the two men had repeatedly robbed vending machines late at night, beginning at the end of 2001, and have confessed to about 100 thefts.
When the vending machine alarm system senses vibrations, it automatically transmits preregistered information, including its location, to police via a built-in mobile terminal. _________________ Michael_Voyageur
