Survey: Teachers' confidence dwindles
Few feel good about counseling students.
Just 6 percent of teachers at elementary and junior high schools have confidence in their ability to counsel students in social skills and other nonacademic matters, according to a recent survey.
The figure was markedly lower than in Britain and China, where 47 percent and 73 percent, respectively, of teachers were confident of their ability to shepherd students toward becoming more well-rounded individuals.
The lower confidence level of teachers in Japan was attributed to the intense scrutiny they come under from students' parents, according to a professor who conducted the survey.
"A growing number of teachers are losing their confidence as they are being watched closely by students' parents and local communities,'' said Sawako Yufu, professor of educational sociology at Fukuoka University of Education.
Teachers' confidence could be improved if they established more cooperative relationships with students' parents, Yufu said.
About 1,300 teachers in Tokyo and 10 prefectures, 700 teachers in Shanghai and Yunnan province in China, and 1,400 teachers in Britain were questioned as part of the survey.
Teachers in all three countries were asked whether they have confidence in their ability in five areas:
*Offering students guidance counseling in social skills and other nonacademic matters;
*Teaching their subject;
*Knowledge of their subject;
*Planning classes; and
*Leading after-school club activities.
The results of the survey were released over the weekend at a Tokyo meeting of the Japan Society of Educational Sociology.
While only 6 percent of teachers in Japan said they were confident of their ability to offer guidance counseling, the figure jumped to about 55 percent when teachers who felt "to some extent confident'' were included.
But this was still dramatically lower than the corresponding figures in Britain and China. In Britain the combined total was about 92 percent, while in China it stood at 98 percent.
In the four other areas, figures for teachers who said they have confidence ranged from 8 to 11 percent in Japan, compared with 33 to 78 percent in Britain and 53 to 80 percent in China.(IHT/Asahi: September 23,2003)
