I am about to get go to Japan in order to pursue my higher studies. I have just been accepted in the Monbukagakusho scholarship which will give me 152.000 Y per month.
I want to ask you if this amount will be enough. I precise that I will be living in Tsukuba, 50 Km far from Tokyo.
I will be grateful if you give me an idea on prices in Japan : food, accommodation, transport...
Considering that tuition fees are paid, and that you will have access to the housing for foreigners (call your university to know how to apply as soon as possible), yes, it is more than enough.
For transports, there may be students passes. If not, well, prices depends on how far from the university you live. Think of 400Y per day, or buy a bike.
Food is cheap in supermarkets if you stick to Japanese food. Foreign food and fruits are expensive.
Accomodation: most likely to be insanely cheap if you're hosted by the university. Otherwhy, I suggest you start looking for flatsharing. You may find a big room in a big house for a small price with other grad students.

hi Houcem,
it depend of your way whose you want to live.
In Japan you can eat with few yens.
You'll eat "ramen" or "soba" all days but you can survive ^^.
You say that you gonna live in Tsukuba but you didn't say how many do you have to pay per month ?
Please, check your distance between Tsukuba and Tokyo on this website Jorudan.
You gonna see price and how much time do you need to reach tokyo city !
Then, if you think you'll be limited by your amount,
I don't know your trip's duration but you can try to find a job (baïto) over there...
The main worries about a student when he lives in Japan (and particulary next to Tokyo) is :
- housing
- food
- transport
In fact, you're confronted to same problems than a tourist
By the way , Im thinking about going phd.
Im currently discussing with the lab sensei.
If it goes well, do you have any idea about the time course of the process to ask for the scholarship... and do you know any other scholarship than mambusho ?
