Foreign Ministry puts online documents from 1867-1912
Citation: | The Yomiuri Shimbun
The Foreign Ministry has put online its digital archive of documents on Japanese foreign policy from 1867 to 1912.
The information made available on the Internet digital images covers about 80,000 pages of documents compiled by the ministry in 86 volumes of books.
It includes documents on the Sino-Japanese War (1894-95), the Anglo-Japanese Alliance concluded in 1902, and negotiations since the 1871 mission led by Tomomi Iwakura to revise unequal treaties concluded with Britain, France, the Netherlands, Russia and the United States during the closing years of the Edo period (1603-1867).
The compiling of diplomatic documents started in 1936, with 201 volumes having been published so far. The books are available for reading at the National Diet Library.
The ministry decided to put on its Web site the digital reproductions of the documents from 1867 to 1912 because only a few volumes covering that period are available at the library.
The remaining documents are set to be digitized and will eventually be made available on the Web site.
