Sites in kids' magazine link to adult Web pages

A monthly magazine aimed at young children introduced Web sites in its latest edition that contained links to adult sites, it has been learned.

Shogakukan, which publishes the magazine, realized the mistake after the parent of a young reader complained. Company officials said it was possible children would deliberately connect to the Web sites if they published an apology, so they decided to publish an article on the dangers of e-mail and the Internet in their next edition instead.

The problem sites were introduced in a feature in the new September edition of the monthly magazine "Shogaku Rokunensei."

The feature, titled "The road to mastering e-mail and letters," listed useful information on how to write letters and e-mail, and introduced six sites containing pictograms and melodies to signal incoming calls on cell phones.

However, three of these sites contained advertisements that linked to adult dating sites requiring users to be aged 18 or over, as well as adult esthetic clinics.

The magazine covered over the advertisements in a photograph of the page in its feature, but a parent of a young reader connected to the Web site and realized the problem. The magazine has a circulation of about 64,000 copies.

"We knew there was an advertisement on the page, but we didn't go as far as to find out what kind of site it connected to," the magazine's editor, Ichiro Akaboshi, said. "We regret out lack of awareness." (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Aug. 7, 2004)
