A man who grabbed a bag of toiletries from a Shibuya subway station employee after shooting the victim was apparently under the impression the bag contained cash, police said.
After the shooting near the ticket gate of Shibuya Station on the Hanzomon Line Wednesday morning, police investigated the scene and questioned other officials to find that the man had been following the victim for at least 50 meters.
Because Tokyo Metro employees often deliver cash takings to an underground office near the ticket gate, police suspect that the gunman mistakenly believed the victim, Shigeo Nishioka, was delivering money.
Nishioka was attacked while walking with a paper bag from a platform on the subway Ginza Line to the underground office.
A passerby told officers that she saw a man tailing Nishioka, who was dressed in a uniform, when the victim was walking down the stairs at the station.
Tokyo Metro officials deliver their daily takings, about 328 million yen on average, to the underground office near the ticket gate. Bank clerks then pick up the cash daily.
The gunman snatched the paper bag containing Nishioka's clothes and toilet articles and fled, officers said.
Doctors at the hospital where Nishioka was taken have removed one bullet from his stomach and said that his condition was not life-threatening. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, June 24, 2004)

Et pour parler des trains, aujourd'hui jeudi vers les midi, encore une histoire de vol dans les trains, il faut remarquer que les deux incidents se sont déroulés dans des lignes de la Tokyu (Hanzomon et Toyoko).

Article Mainichi :

A group of about five purse thieves attacked commuters and employees at a Tokyo train station shortly after noon Thursday, spraying tear gas at them and attacking them with knives, police said.
Police said the men surrounded two elderly female passengers at Denenchofu Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line in Tokyo's Ota-ku at about 12:10 p.m. Thursday, and stole the women's purses.
The women alerted a station employee, but when the employee confronted the men, they sprayed him with tear gas and fled. When a 32-year-old passenger chased after the men, one of the men pulled out a knife and slashed him, leaving him with injuries to his fingers.
The two female passengers complained of sore eyes after the attack but their condition was not thought to be serious.
Police have launched a search for the assailants, who fled toward the station's east exit.
A man who operated a jewelry store in front of the station said ambulances pulled up at the station shortly after noon. "It's usually quiet here and I was surprised," the operator said.
The incident came on the heels of an attack on a Toyo Metro employee at Shibuya Station on Wednesday, in which the employee was shot and injured. Denenchofu Station is seven stations away from Shibuya Station. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, June 24, 2004)

La personne qui a tiré sur un employé du métro à Shibuya s'est rendue à la police...

Article du Japan Times online (http://www.japantoday.com/e/?content=news&cat=2&id=303519), en anglais.

TOKYO — Police arrested a 64-year-old man Saturday over the Wednesday morning shooting of a subway worker at Tokyo Metro's Shibuya Station, after the man, carrying a gun, turned himself in at the Metropolitan Police Department.

The police said the man, identified as Tokuhisa Kumagai, appeared at the headquarters of the department in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward, and told them, "I did it."

Kumagai was carrying a .38 caliber revolver, which was the same type of gun used in Wednesday's shooting, and was arrested for violating the firearms control law, according to the police.

The suspect also said he threw away a paper bag that was snatched from the subway worker who was shot, the police said.

Police said they are still investigating, however, due to discrepancies between the man's appearance and the description of the assailant provided by witnesses.

The subway worker, Shigeo Nishioka, 32, was shot by a man aged around 50 and wearing shades just before 9 a.m. Wednesday in an underground passage to Shibuya Station on suburban railway operator Tokyu Corp.'s Denentoshi Line.

According to the police, Nishioka said a man came up to him from behind pointing a gun and told him to hand over a paper bag he was holding before he was shot and sustained serious injuries.

Police therefore suspected that robbery was the motivation for the incident.

Shibuya is one of Tokyo's major railway stations, serving a number of railway and subway lines. (Kyodo News)
