NTT DoCoMo Exhibits Concept Model of 'TV' Phone
May 18, 2004 (TOKYO) -- NTT DoCoMo Inc revealed its "OnQ" model, a concept mobile phone capable of showing terrestrial digital TV broadcasts, at the "Business Show Tokyo 2004."
As the concept phone, the company went beyond a mere terminal for viewing real-time TV broadcasts outside one's house. It has positioned the phone as a device for users to carry home-recorded TV programs and view them wherever possible. NTT DoCoMo has suggested using the OnQ phone for "timeshift viewing" with the support of communications lines.
The OnQ unit consists of: (1) a mobile phone holding a receptor for a "one-segment" broadcast, and (2) a cradle holding a hard disk device (HDD) recorder. The exhibition, however, only showed the concept, and the exhibit did not have a tuner, communication function or HDD for actual operation.
NTT DoCoMo listed two reasons for emphasizing the "timeshift viewing" function for a mobile phone with TV reception capability.
One is the issue of battery life and the other is the issue of circumstances where users cannot receive broadcasts due to poor reception, such as underground.
The company explains, "With 'timeshift viewing,' it is possible to cut out and view a program whatever the user wants for a short period of time, say, five or 10 minutes of a program as if it is e-mailing or i-mode browsing. Because users do not view programs for a long time, it is possible to avoid the battery life issue, and they can view them wherever they are as long as the contents are in an internal memory."
As a means of supporting "timeshift viewing," NTT DoCoMo is reported to be considering the distribution of metadata regarding the contents of TV programs via communications lines.
First of all, the user transfers programs recorded on the cradle's HDD recorder to the mobile phone's internal memory or a small memory card, which carries capacity for several hours or several tens of hours of programs.
When the user views programs for five or 10 minutes of spare time, then he or she will access the desired scenes using the metadata showing the content of the program.
To accumulate programs on the cradle, the user could have a built-in tuner or connect it to a home server. Manufacturers will be the ones to be able to employ their ideas of how to go about methods for storing programs.
NTT DoCoMo has basically two ideas as a means of distributing metadata. One is for a TV broadcasting house to create it and sell it to users via i-mode. The other is for users to create it themselves. If users can communicate metadata of information such as TV channels, viewing time and contents, they will be able to exchange "word of mouth" information about TV programs by e-mail.
The company does not believe it will create a copyright issue, as image contents will not be distributed. NTT DoCoMo intends to investigate a profitable business model by metadata sales and an increase in communication volume through distribution.
