Osaka to modify bridge to deter jumping fans
OSAKA -- Osaka city officials have decided to temporarily add a sloped edge to Osaka's Ebisu Bridge to stop people walking sideways along it and leaping into the Dotonbori River after Japan Series baseball matches, it has been learned.
The modification to the bridge is expected to be completed on Oct. 17, a day ahead of the start of the seven-game series on Oct. 18, officials said.
When the Hanshin Tigers won the central league baseball pennant last month, about 5,300 people leaped into the waters of the dirty river to celebrate, in line with a long-held tradition among sports fans. Two days later a man fell into the river and drowned.
Osaka Mayor Takafumi Isomura said he wanted people to stop putting themselves in danger.
"I want people to stop doing things that cause trouble for other people and expose themselves to danger," he said. "Let's celebrate in a calm Osaka-style fashion."
City officials said many people who had jumped into the river had walked along a 13-centimeter wide ledge on the river side of the bridge before leaping. To prevent them from doing this, a sloped edge will be added to this side, thereby deterring potential jumpers, officials said.
Officials had reportedly considered building the fence along the side of the bridge higher, but abandoned the idea because supporting pillars would have made the road narrower.
The addition will cost about 1.5 million yen, and will be removed following a victory parade scheduled for Nov. 3. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Oct. 11, 2003)

Authorities in Osaka are concerned that Ebisubashi bridge will be unable to support the weight of thousands of celebrating baseball fans if the Hanshin Tigers win the Japan Series later this month.
The bridge in the Minami entertainment district of Chuo Ward, Osaka, was built about 80 years ago and is a popular gathering point for sports fans, many of whom celebrate wins by jumping off the bridge into the Dotonborigawa river.
According to the municipal government, about 2,000 people spent several hours on the bridge after the Tigers clinched the Central League pennant on Sept. 15.
Although government inspectors found no damage to Ebisubashi after that night of revelry, authorities fear that even more fans will flock there if the Tigers beat the Daiei Hawks in the Japan Series, due to begin next week. They are concerned that the bridge could give way under the weight of people.
The bridge, built in 1925, is made of reinforced concrete. The municipal government hopes to tear it down and replace it in fiscal 2006.
The 36-meter-long, 11-meter-wide structure was built to support up to 490 kilograms per square meter, meaning it is capable of holding up to 2,800 people at once, according to the government.
The underside of the bridge's middle section, however, has aged visibly. A large number of cracks have appeared and chunks of concrete have been dislodged.

en effet, apres la victoire de l'equipe d'Osaka, un fidele supporter Nippon, mais demeurant a Paris a, comme le veut la "tradition" bu beaucoup d'alcool avec des amis pour celebrer la victoire, ...puis, toujours en respect de la tradition, il s'est jete dans la fameuse "riviere" qu'on appelle La Seine !

En même temps, il me semble que la victoire des Hanshin Tigers est exceptionelle, ils avaient plus habitués leurs supporters à des défaites qu'à autre chose... . Ce qui laisse à la municipalité d'Osaka un petit moment pour prendre les mesures nécessaires.
Sinon j'avais moi aussi entendu parler du Japonais qui s'est jetté dans la Seine. J'espère qu'il ne s'est pas noyé... _________________ Sucre. | Candyland.jp
