Hot spring benefits to be verified

Doctors and researchers will begin work next fiscal year to verify whether hot springs have health benefits and draw up standards on any causal relationships found between the quality of spring water and the efficacy of hot spring therapies.

In cooperation with ryokan inns and hot spring facilities in the Gora area in Hakonemachi in Kanagawa Prefecture, experts at such entities as Tokyo University Medical Science Institute and the Japan Association of Physical Medicine Balneology and Climatology will start by compiling basic data on people using hot springs for medical treatment with the aim of quantifying the effects of such therapies.

"We chose the area since it's close to the Tokyo metropolitan area and it has a variety of springs," said Toshiyuki Sato, director of Minkan Katsuryoku Kaihatsu Kiko (private sector vitality development organization), which is responsible for the project.

According to the organization, which is affiliated with the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry, experts will study the blood pressure, blood sugar level and other conditions of people suffering from such diseases as high blood pressure and diabetes before and after they undergo medical treatment programs, including bathing at a hot spring and dietary therapy, to determine the effects of treatments at hot springs.

The experts will then seek to determine whether there is a causal link between perceived health benefits and the content of hot spring therapies and spring water quality to draw up standards on treatment effects for various types of hot spring.
